I have 56 processes running on my laptop; is this normal?
Answers:
you can end task that you think you are not using but be sure that the username is not service host or system to avoid errors in your operating system. also try checking your startup menu because maybe, most of the installed programs there automatically starts when windows starts. this also eats processes in your computer that should not be used unless you are going to use it.
Yes, For a computer running to much crap. You need to bring it down to 42 or less.
As long as your Anti-Virus says there are no viruses and your computer is not running slow, thats perfectly normal. I have over 23 background programs (most of them are anti-virus, weather and what not) and over 100 running processes, havent had one problem except my RAM being chewed up
it all depends, we'd need a list to check if there was any malicious processes running. but just so you know on my laptop right now i have 91 process running, so dont be worried about the amount, since some programs like virus protection and all have multiple processes running at one time.
the only time to really look into this is if you are having slowdowns, or are experiencing errors and whatnot
It's not abnormal; there are many windows processes.
For a complete list of all the windows processes you can visit:

56 Processes seem to be a high figure. Are you running Resource-Intensive Programs like Code Generators ( Sun Java Studio,Eclipse,Microsoft Visual Studio,Weblogic ) , Databases like Oracle , Heavy Games etc ? If yes,It is possible that there are a number of processes that are running .Also check in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services (If you have Windows O/S - for Unix you need to check Configuration files of Individual Programs) and check how many Services are set to Automatic Start .If possible, set those which you don't require to be started automatically each time you boot your Laptop to manual .
But be careful and do this only If you are confident about which program is used for both. Also run a Full System Scan with a Good Anti-Virus and check for the presence of any Worm/Trojan/Virus.
A Trojan could be spawning an extra Process. If nothing helps, call a System Specialist.
Quite normal. Windows is Windows. The ones to worry about are the ones in the Startup routine. They're usually listed as little icons on the bottom right. Each is a running program taking up memory. They're not the full program, but they still use energy. I have seven and that's more than enough. If you have more, there are ways of stopping them, it's not a job for the feint hearted.
Your number is normal. Processes are not just programs you run on the desktop, but also involve many underlying system utilities that Windows runs by default. Of course, you could also have added peripherals or programs that add their own background processes such as antivirus and printing utilities. If I see something suspicious or that sparks my curiosity, a quick Yahoo search will quickly answer what it might be running.
You could, of course, ask about a process here at RunQA.com s. ;o)
also check your toolbar. you can exit running processes there by right-clicking then exiting. That way you don't turn off any mandatory processes
If you dont have it already ran it, find adaware and download, run and delete all spyware.
Go to "Start"
Select "Run"
enter. msconfig
go all the way to the right and select "Startup"
look thru the listing and uncheck everything except for your virus and firewall programs.. If you dont know what it is uncheck it. You can select uncheck all if you wish.. It won't hurt anything, you just might lose your antivirus from automatically loading or your firewall, you just have to select it under programs after the next step.
OK now reboot your computer
When it reboots there will be a new message, Check do not show at next startup or something like that.
Now run task manager and see what you have now... Programmers being such egomaniacs as they are want their program running in the background because they either ate too much acid or they are really egomaniacs. You don't need all that.. The more that appears in the bottom of your right hand screen, the more memory you are taking up and that reverts to slowing down your computer.. cablesweep@yahoo.com if you need me..
If you have windows vista, then its normal. windows xp could run on like 30, but i cant seem to lower it under 50 with vista.
