Why does my laptop screen suddenly go dark? as though the brightness has been reduced to the minimum?

i thought i'd writen this question myself as i have had my toshiba satellite for 4 years and it does exactly same thing, i def think its the battery, cos when you don't have the lead plugged in and its running on battery only it does same thing when power running low. my machine is performing overall CRAP and i am thinking of buying a new one anyway cos they've come down so much in price/
I had the same problem with mine. It turned out to be a battery problem
You have a problem with power supply. Either it is a bad charger or a bad battery, depending what you are using at the moment
ok this may not be the battery, other comentators may want to do this
1st, take the battery pack off, they unclip easy
start the pc up on mains, yes itll work without a battery
if the screen is bright then yes its the battery or the acpi setting for the mode its in
if its 4 y/o then more likely the battery than the acpi settings but thats another story
a battery problem could entail the pack no longer holding a charge or the charging loop being faulty but this is as far as you need fault find b4 it goes for repair
If its not bright then its one fo several things, most likely is the flouro tube inside the lcd panel has gone which backlights the screen
you will still see details becase light refelcts off the white background sheet in the panel
this can be replaced by a repoutable laptop repair shop (try a tv repair place and skip pc world)
theres a slight chance it could be the voltage regulator but the repairer will pick this up
