How do the finger mouse movement pads work on laptops?

I'm not sure what they're called, but how do the little pads that you use in place of a mouse work on a laptop?

Answers:
They are called touch pads(pcs) and track pads (macs) they pick up microimpulses or really small ammounts of electricity that your body contains and iterprits them as movement so trying to use a pencit wont work but most thing metal will.
