Problems with mac?

when I hit the power button on my mac and then click shut down, my mac freezes. why does it do this? am I doing something incorrectly?

Answers:
You need to just click shut down. The computer will turn itself off, no need to press the button. You only press the button to turn it on, or when it freezes.
Mdog is correct. Some details:

Hitting the power button once will:
-Turn it on if it's off.
-Put it to sleep if it's on.

Holding the power button for about 10 seconds will force-shutdown your computer. This is a little better than pulling the plug, but is still not the greatest, and should only be used when the computer freezes.

To shutdown normally, you should go to the  menu, and hit shutdown.
