they're both correct.
i would like to add that with ev-do, some areas will get you dial-up speed connections and some areas wont allow you to get a connection at all. it works off cell towers, so in most major metropolitan areas, it works fine, although some areas are much slower than others.
the cost is about 60$/month for sprint and about the same with verizon if you already have a verizon account or 80$/month if you don't, and you can get some of the cards free, mostly after rebates. although, you wanted a usb version, which might cost you about 100$. if you have a pcmcia card slot, use that version. it's cheaper and runs just as fast as usb and you don't risk breaking it off if you tip your laptop over too much like you do with the usb version.
lastly, both requires a 1-2 year commitment and early termination fees do apply, much like your cell phone.
Talk to your cell phone provider about getting an EVDO card. It will allow you to access the internet anywhere there is a cell network signal.
check out verizon wireless' internet usb adapter! you have to pay a month fee but its REALLY fast and totally awesome!
