Why does my notebook screen flicker when not plugged in?

I've had this sony viao notebook for a little over a year and now my screen flickers to where I can't use the computer without it being plugged in. I thought it was because of certain programs, but it always happens even when nothing is running. whats wrong with it?

Answers:
its bein a pita ... check ur power control software .. maybe see if theres a function key to change the brightness see if it helps ..
Your power converter is probably busted.

The power converter is the thing that switches between your laptop's battery and the AC/DC adapter.

It seems like your converter is continuously trying to switch between power sources.
