Blue screen of death?

Before April of this year I never had a blue screen on this Dell computer (the computer is from 2002). Now since April I experienced a blue screen a death once a month. When the blue screen of death happened I wasn't doing anything heavy on the memory like games..just browsing the web.

if it happens once a month I shouldn't be worried about or should I?

I don't have a virus or spy ware as well.

also have 512MB of RAM. So i don't think it's problem with running out of memory.

could be a failing HD?
Go to the Dell website and update all of your drivers, also make sure you have the lastest updates of windows. After you get all of the downloads then restart your computer, then run the maintenance programs, like disk cleanup and defrag. You really should be using a virus program.
512MB is okay but kind of slow for todays usage.many programs are sapping computers more than ever..i suggest you do a good cleaning of your computer,,, get a virus and spyware program to scrub your system.defrag it and run a disc cleanup to get rid of old download junk...good luck..
If what Cheryl suggests doesn't stop it, call Dell and get a tech to help with the set up in BIOS(something you shouldn't mess with yourself).
I have a laptop with 1G Ram and it happens to me occasionally, too. Like you, I'm just surfing. I maintain my laptop regularly and I have no games loaded. When it happens, I just use the manual override to shut the laptop down and then power it back up after about 15 seconds or so. Then all works as it should. I haven't seen any side effects or any bad residual effects, so my guess is this is just "nature of the beast."
I haven't had a problem with my OS since I installed Linux. download the ISO then write it to a CD. If you don't have the original windows disks Microsoft might get you to buy it again. by having Linux if things get worse you have a free alternative to Windows. If you install wine you can run a lot of windows software on the Linux OS. Most viruses attack windows based systems, so I don't even use anti-virus software
There could be a near infinite number of reasons as to why you are getting a BSOD so like stated in the other answers make sure everything is updated and get yourself some kind of protection like i virus program. i don't use virus software though (waste of money) i prefer using a program like Deep Freeze that just deletes everything that wasn't previously "Frozen" so its kind of a pain when installing new programs but its a one time fee and it will always keep you safe
Are you "running" win 98se or millenium ?? You stated you do or do not have virus software or spyware in place ?? 98 & mil are notorious for rhe"blue screen of Death !!Only problem is Microsoft has discontinued support fro both systems !! Have you tried to delete your OS and reloading it ?? When I was still using Win98SE that cured the problem. If you need "spy/adware go to www.lavasoft. com ans dnld "AD -AWARE . It is 100% free . I have used it for years !! As to virus protection Zone Alarm offers a "freebie" also ---- www.zonealarm.com....Both are user friendly .Or try www.grc.co and see what is new. There are many free programs (very small) written by steve gibson. Also you might consider joining The Langa List. Also free and there are many tips and tricks people send in that might just help you. ....www.langalist.com... of the info is archived so you can retrieve (usually) an answer to your problem. Good Luck. Hope this helps !!
