Inspiron 531 Information?
I have had a lot of bad luck with computers recently. In March I purchased a Toshiba A100-027 Laptop from PC World. The machine ran fine untill I noticed there was a problem with startup becoming delayed - a format resolved this issue. I then discovered an audio glitch when the fan went on and off and the fan also started to annoy me as it turned on and off every minute. I took it back to PC World a few days after the 28 day policy was over but after several hours of arguing they agreed to give me an exchange laptop. I decided to get a different make laptop. I took it home and turned it on and it seemed to run OK untill 5 mins later, I realised the keyboard was not positioned right and the fan and keyboard started making a terrible screaching noise from some kind of metal vibration. I took it back to PC World the next day and quickly got a refund of the machine.
I decided I would get a Desktop PC because I seem to have no luck with laptops. Read additional notes...

I recently purchased an Inspiron 531 and I love it. I got the option with the 4400+ processor (wish I woulda got the 5000+ though).
Fan is silent. Hard drive is soundless. Everything runs smooth and silent except for the video card I bought an put in myself. The nVidia that came with the system worked fine just didn't perform like I wanted for gaming. It was extrememly quiet though.
The case does not rattle and is very sturdy to be able to hold my logitech subwoofer on top of it.
The only think I don't like is the system bios screen stays on a little longer than I'd prefer. Dell upgraded their system bios and it takes a little longer to boot up than its previous version i had in my older Dell E310.
One think I do like is with the AMD processor you have the option to turn on what they call "Cool 'n Quite". This allows the processor only to use max voltage when it really needs to. This allows your motherboard to remain cooler and allow your system fan not to kick on and off frequently.
Hope this helps you!
Wow- my advice is to never buy a computer again. The odds of three new computers (all different makes) having the problems as you describe are astronomical.
The only conclusion can be that it is user error. No way possible that it is all just bad luck.
