I work for an IT consultancy and the first thing I will say is DONT GO TO PC WORLD!
The reason for this is they claim their computers are 'plug and play' which means that you can take it home, plug it in and away you go... big mistake. Think anti virus, spywear etc etc. I stupidy (before learning about IT) bought one from there and it is rubbish.
Dell or HP are your best bet. Best buy direct from them so you are covered if things go wrong.
Spending that little? Get a DELL inspiron from their website www.dell.co.uk. If all you're using is Word then you don't need to spend more than that and they should have one to match the price. I only buy DELL, i bought a toshiba for a friend on Ebay and yep, it never worked.
You should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 from Pricemad.
Like the others said, go for some company that you trust. Though saying this, do NOT go for a company like Dell (a HUGE brand name- with them what you normally end up paying for in the end is the brand name, not the laptop).

Personally, I would suggest Novatech, as nearly all our PCs/Laptops have come from them, and they've worked great, plus the customer support is better than that of the larger companies.

Take a look at these two laptops:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/nbran...

Ofcourse, neither of these two will be any good if you want to play games, watch DVDs etc. If you're planning on doing things like that, then get yourself a desktop, as they're about half the price for the same specs as a laptop these days (you'll get a desktop twice as good as those laptops for the same price).

If you just plan on using Word etc, then these laptops will just about do, but Office 2007 might be pushing it on those really lower end machines (the requirements Microsoft gives you are what it needs to RUN, not what it needs to RUN WELL).

Hope I haven't confused you even more, but what's probably best is if you got a friend who knows a lot about computers to look it up for you (he can explain on hand exactly what each thing means etc). Whatever you do, it's going to take you some time to find the right one for you- it took me a few weeks to decide which one I'm getting (I'm waiting til august so the new specs come out), but eventually I personally chose this one: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/nbran...

(the one on the right).

Good luck!

I recommend Dell, Hewlett Packard (HP), Packard Bell, Toshiba, Philips and Sony ( But Dell and HP are the best). Make sure you get over 512MB memory, over 80GB hard drive (I think) and Intel Pentium 4 or Intel Core Duo Processor or Intel Core Duo, if you buy Intel Celeron your laptop will go slower as you add more documents or files in. Try Pcworld, Currys / Currys. Digital, Sony or Dell.

Also I tink you should get a garuntee because laptops are hard to repair so you are better off with a desktop and they are cheap with great quality. I got mine for about £500 or £600 and it's great. It has 1GB/ 1204MB memory, 150GB hard drive with a Nvida Geforce 6200 LE Graphics Card.
Checkout the HP nx6325 at eBuyer.co.uk.

Sempron 3500+, 1GB 667MHz RAM, ATI graphics, DVD writer etc.

£400 delivered.

Bought one of these before Christmas and it's a very capable machine.

The build quality is great.

Does all you want and more.

And it's an HP.

Ooh.
If you only have that amount in the budget you can get basic laptop from PC World which will cover your word processing and internet but for movies and possibly if you spend a lot of time on internet you will need more RAM and certainly a higher spec than £400 will give you.
