the laptop is having a lifespan until you like to use it. normally battery will dead between 3 to 5 years. cd rom will dead depend on use. wifi card may also dead depend on use all other systems will be good enough to last for more than 10 years with carefull use.
actually i think your problem is slow speed of laptop.
you may try following to rectify it.
1.increase RAM- you can increase the RAM to speed up your laptop. Now the RAM is in lowest price in history. So don't wait to increase RAM.
2. Reinstall windows - This will certainly speed up your computer as it was new.
3. Change your hard disk with a new high capacity high speed one - this also help to increase the overall performance.
all the above you should contact a professional to help you otherwise you will run in to trouble.

If i were you i'd get another one because if it waits 20 minutes to load something up then you should just get a brand new one that you'll be able to have for college!

I think it depends on what brand it is and whether you modify it over time. The real question is, how much money are you willing to put into it?
well if ur maintain it and keep it in good shape it will last for ever almost ive had one of my laptops for 10 years it still works fine except the fact the back screen light gave out but that happens to every laptop after long periods of time so best if u got a new one or ull have to tilt it up to a light to see whats on the screen like i do if that screen chip that controls the back light gives out its a cheap fix if that does happen but i havent got around to fixing it
You'll be fine. I've got a 10 year old 266MHz desktop that can hold its own. It's no slower on the net than my 1.summink GHz laptops.
It would be better if you got a new one before you leave b/c you'll need it especially if you're going to take notes on microsoft word...
my dads laptop didnt last that long. it lasted about four months because when he was watch tv he spilt milk on it. he thought he could fix it but when he tried he just broke it more.
