How to reformat laptop wtih 2 partitions and 2 OS?

i thought that in reformatting my laptop, i would just reinstall my os. but when i did that, i end up having 2 OS. the windows xp software just installed to the D: partition that i have. i was planning to remove the partition that i have because some part of my hard drive is missing. out of 60 gig i only have 52. i want it to just have 1 partition in my hard drive instead of 2. what would i do? i need your help. i don't want to spend money paying someone to do the job.

okay ... I would have done the following

1. Download disk management utility like http://www.soft32.com/download/free-tria... or http://partitionlogic.org.uk/ and format the disk drive. With there utility you can create, delete, merge disk drive easily.

2. Then try to restart with my desire OS.

3. If my system is not working due to MBR problem, I would have reinstall OS again in my drive.
