What should I do or not do? the couple of times I've tried to play a dvd movie on my lap-top it skips & jerks
Answers:
it could possibly be because of the following reasons:
1. There is something wrong with your DVD Drive
2. Your processor is slow
3. You do not have enough RAM
4. You do not have a good enough graphics card
How to fix
1. You could buy a new DVD drive made specificly for laptops, I would suggest if you're not tech savvy to get someone to install it for you.
2. If you have a processor that is slower than 1Ghz then I would just suggest to buy a new computer, but if you have a processor greater than 1Ghz then your processor is not the problem.
3. If you have less than 512MB RAM in your computer I would suggest upgrading, or if you have any programs running in the background to exit out of them to make sure that the media player that your using will be able to have enough RAM to run.
4. I'm not sure how bad a graphics card has to be to not be able to run a DVD, but since you bought it not too long ago, it should be able to have a good enough graphics card to run it.
the disk may be scratched, the cdrom drive in the notebook may be dirty, try dusting it, or if you are moveing the computer alot while its playing that may be it

If it is still under warranty call Dell...In the meantime get this.
Copy the movie onto the HDD and play it from their.
Or eliminate background running programs that take up ram.
There's a great difference when your playing movies on your laptop rather than our DVD player unit. Its good if your DVD CD is new and has no scratches. this plays well, this scratch DVD CD try to play this on a DVD player unit it still stops but the movies keeps on playing. See to it also if your using a DVD writer unit or a DVD player on your PC. A writer is always a writer a Player play even automatically when you inserted your DVD rom. There are two types of DVD unit one that has only on and off. The other has a switch on play button this writer has a good feature on playing your CD's.
