What would be the best type of compaq laptop to buy? acer? dell? toshiba?

Toshiba! I just bought one today and you won't beat the quality. I had a problem with Windows Vista and their support was awesome. Their support is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Also you will get a $450 Toshiba that an identical $700 Dell would cost. You pay $200 for the Dell name. Compaq's are ok, but HP gave me problems with my laptop and their made by the same company. Acer seems like your cheap man's laptop so if you would want a cheaper laptop they might be the one to go to. If you want some good deals and get hundreds off your price. Shop at www.ebay.com, always check the warranties and returns, but if you can find a new system you would save hundreds by shopping there. DELL or ACER.. great!!
There are other laptop brands besides those. You know Compaq makes laptops? Any way I'd go with Dell ofut of the group 1st. Then I'd go Toshiba, Compaq, and Acer. Supposedly Acer has improved in quality, but I am still a doubter.
I would suggest Compaq or HP, great reliable machines. Acer is also a great machine. You can find a great value laptop for your price range. Walmart has some great values online for the Acer Laptops.

I have not really looked into laptops lately but for a price range of 300-450 you are going to get worse then junk.
Seems you can get a Inspiron 1501 for about $500 on the Dell.com website but still for that low of a price range you are buying something that was out of date years before it was even made :)
Aspire 5100 5674 seems to be offered at like $500 so that is also over your price range. Maybe Ebay youcan score one for less but do you really want to do that

Just my own personal preference, but I would never buy a DELL. I have heard alot of horror stories from friends who have bought Dell laptops, and even a few desktops. I Like HP's and have always had good luck ( '97 Compaq 486-75mhz, '00 HP P2-450mhz, '06 HP 1.8ghz, and '07 HP Dual-core 2.0ghz all working great... )
I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I'm ordering mine right now, it's a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot!
In that price range you are limited to Acer.
