If you want to view your laptop screen on the TV, it can be done several ways. You may have an S-Video port on your laptop. See if you have one on your TV. If not, you can easily get an S-Video to RCA connector at radio shack for a few bucks. You should probably just stop by a Radio Shack/Best Buy and they will tell you the best way. It all depends on your computer and TV.
The easiest way... use the rca port on the back of your laptop to plug it into the back of your tv. Your laptop may not have the connection required to do this. What kind of laptop?

Depends on the connections you have avalable on the laptop and TV. If you have a rca standard video or svideo out on your laptop, you can connect that to the corresponding port on your tv. If your TV has a vga input, you can use that directly from your laptop's vga port. If all you have is a VGA out on your laptop and your TV does not have a VGA in, you need an adapter that will convert the vga signal to one compatible with your TV.
if your laptop has an s-video port and so does your tv, connect them with the wire! That's the only way i know how.
