I got a portable hard disk drive.when i connect it to my pc it says found new hard ware both options don' work

Usually, when you plug in the portable hard drive into the computer, it will install the driver automatically.
However, in your case, the driver of your computer/hard drive is either missing or not compatable. Therefore, you have to check whether your portable hard disk came with any installation disc to install your software. If your hard disk came with an installation disc. You have to insert the disc into the computer when the found new hardware message appears and choose option 2. Choose the destination manually. This should solve the problem.
But, if the hard disk does not come with any installation disc, you will have to check the brand of the portable hard disk and download the approriate driver from the manufacturer's web page and install them.
Another alternative will be that you can go to the shop where you bought this portable hard disk and seek assistance from the seller.

are you connected to the internet? if the hd didn't come with a disk then (assuming you're running xp) it should install the software automatically.
Put the CD that came with the hard drisk drive and click number one. It will download the driver from the disk. If you dont have a disk, you can download the driver online, by most likely, going to the manufacturers website. If it recognizes that it is a hard drive, all you really have to do is go to "my computer", right click the drive, and format it.
Maybe you can change the port of usb you connect your portable HD, maybe it will work. or use the CD of your portable HD if provided...
