I'm buying a laptop in late november, and i'm trying to decide between an apple laptop or a Dell Inspiron.

I'm will to spend up to 1200$ for it. I will get an extra 2GBs or RAM when I buy it also. Which laptop will last me a long time, be very durable and versatile, and please give me the pros and cons of both. 10 points for most detailed answer.

Really it boils down to preference, but if you want pros and cons here you go:

Apple: Pros: Great quality, dual-boot both Windows XP/Vista and MacOS X. Nice interface. Great battery life. Cons: tends to be more expensive, including additional software if you need it. Customer support isn't great.

Dell: Pros: OK quality, cheaper, great battery life depending on the model. Cons: Customer support is good, but about the same as Apple.

Personally, I would probably go with HP than Dell. Don't buy the RAM through HP, Dell or Apple. RAM is extremely easy to install on laptops and is much cheaper if you do it yourself. You also keep your warranty as well. At least compare between having them install the RAM vs. you doing it. You may very well save yourself a $100 bucks or so.
Dell: Works with most of the worlds software, reasonably priced, great technical support, upgradable easily

Apple: Over priced, proprietary hardware (expensive and often not upgradable), works with virtually no software, unless you install Windows (why didn't you buy Dell to start with?), etc.
Dell: Windows, Cheaper, More games compatible.
Breaks Down Often, Terrible Customer Service

Mac: Easy Operating System, Doesn't Break Down, Stylish
Expensive, Only a few games compatible.

Go for a Mac!
apple
dell insprion is the best you can buy they are better than apple
It's a question of Windows Vista vs Mac O/S. The hardware is somewhat meaningless.

Windows Vista will have more application support than Mac O/S. If will be easier to find assistance on Vista than Mac O/S. If your already used to Windows, then the learning curve will be shorter with Vista. If your used to a Mac, then the learning curve with a Mac is shorter.
im a big fan of apple but dont get. i bought a ibook last years in march and its already broken they put cheap quality into there laptops =( they are trying to charge me $800 to fix it when i can get an new laptop for $400 more go with dell or someone else the only plus side to it is you can put both windows and Mac OS X Operating systems on an apple computer if it has intel
The top rated laptop on Consumers Reports is a MacBook. Check www.consumerreports.com for the info. Just imagine, a life with no hassle or viruses.
Many of the arguments that Dells (or other PC Notebooks) are somehow a better notebook than an Apple Macbook is somewhat misleading. Macbooks are now Intel Based and can run Windows XP or Vista in addition to the OS X operating system. In fact, they can peacefully co-exist on the same computer (same cannot be said of PC notebooks at this time). So, they CAN run games and other Windows exclusive programs if that is that is the reason you are buying a notebook.

As an "independent" computer consultant I see great value in both companies. But, you can have the "best" of both worlds with an Apple Macbook.

The OS X operating system is simple, intuitive and free of viruses and other malware (at this time). Apples can run many of the "major" programs such as Office, Adobe, Quark and others in OS X. But, if you HAVE to use a Windows only title, you can do that too!

Price is a little misleading too. Yes, their is a "small" premium on an Apple, but for notebooks with the same features they are actually pretty competitive, and the others don't have OS X.

You may be wondering which I use? I have both! However, when people ask me which they should consider, I tell them this:

"I USE Macs and I FIX PC's".

Good Luck!
Dell would fit your budget better and PCs do not have compatibility problems with windows.
