Which is better a dell laptop with Vista or an iMac?

i deal with both day to day... and to me if i was in school right now and i had the option between a dell or a mac... there is no discusion there... mac and the why is that is made for etertainment while still has all the other stuff you will need for school... and if comes down to you can get from apple a software that lets you install windows while keeping you mac software, so that you may use either one depending on your task... the only bad thing thou the mac runs pretty expensive to me at least

For basic computing needs that a college student will need, the stories that you hear about Vista are mostly hog wash. If you have always used PCs then there is no reason to change unless you are ready to try something new. That's not to say that a iMac won't run Vista or even XP if your choose.
We run Vista on both of our home machines were one is a gaming system and the other a work tablet. Both run great with only minor issues, such as getting used to Vista asking permission to do things. That goes away in a few weeks of use..
A Dell with XP Home or XP Professional. I have a Dell myself with XP Home and it's a great job. Forget Vista it's nothing but trouble and if you buy a PC with Vista built in you can't go back to XP it's just not on. But Dell will make up a package for you with XP, and for future reference you can upgrade to Vista as soon as it's going someway right.
To make it simple you can put vista over XP that's an upgrade.
But XP over vista is a downgrade and Microsoft dose not accommodate that.
