Should I buy a custom laptop?

get a custom laptop because you can choose the parts and make sure you get want you want. custom laptops are also less likely to give you problems and you can get faster parts for a good price.
Get an IBM (Lenovo) they are expensive but the best quality. Behind that I'd say get a Dell - also very reliable. Don't get a "Joe's Garage Brand" laptop - guaranteed to be garbage.

Note: Custom laptops are not like custom computers. There are no standard size/layouts for laptop parts - they are all custom built. If you buy some off-name brand and they go under, you'll never get a replacement part - not to mention how difficult a memory upgrade would be. However, laptop hard drives are standardized and so are PCMCIA slots.
Im a big fan of SONY however if price means nothing to you then ALIENWARE makes the fastest Ive ever seen.
If you want to buy a custom laptop, I can't stop you. I don't see anything wrong with getting a custom laptop.
If I were you I would buy the Dell or HP and configure the laptop on their site. The problem with custom build laptops is that you can never be too sure what parts they are using, sometimes they use cheap parts or parts that are no longer produced and so out of date. Dell or HP tell you exactly what they put in your laptop and you can choose what you want.
