I want to buy a laptop please help!? Totally clueless!!?
Answers:
I have a Dell laptop which is great. To go wireless yes you need a modem and a router. My modem is with Virgin and I have a linskys router. Therefore you need to get a modem from whomever you choose to be your internet provider and then but a router online as places like Dixons etc are quite expensive. Shocked that someone in PC world could not help you!
To 'go wireless' you need to look for a laptop that says it has 'wireless' or 'wireless card' or something to that effect.
If you are just looking to do office work and surf the net, then Dell (dell.co.uk) will offer you the best deals. They allow you to customise the laptop to your own needs so you can get exactly what you want.
Do *not* go to PC world - they are absolute rip-off merchants. Take it from a computer expert: they are probably the worst PC retailer in the country.
Most modern laptops come with wireless connectivity, but not all. Just check the specs at Dell - it will say 'wireless' if it is ready to go.
best place to go is comet thats where i get my laptops and pcs from what is your budget?
Not too sure myself, as its my Dad and brother who do all the computer stuff in our house! But Windows Xp laptops are good as are Apple Macs. If i were you i'd research carefully on the internet and read reviews, then choose your laptop and get someone to come and set it up for you! You will probably be able to get deals including your modem. If you want a wireless connection, I'd recommend Broadband, adn you get routers with them fairly cheaply Hope i've helped! good luck!
i tried but i have just stuck to my PC I'm clueless to
Hi, dont fret, it is a mine field but dont panic!
You can go through a comapny like dell, i just brought a inspiron laptop with all wifi built in and can have call out support if you get really stuck, or pcworld.co.uk is another, at least you can play before you buy, but the best advise i can offer, is to pop into a local independant pc store, they will help you, i used to work in one and as they not tied to one firm you get more for your money, but ensure you happy with any warranties they may offer. simply if you want support, get dell, if you want to play before you buy, pcworld/toysrus/ retailer but is easily returned. more bit for your money local shop. hope this helps, but just tell what you want they advise what you can get for your money.
good luck
i would recommend scrapping the whole idea of a laptop!
they are over priced, underpowered, under cooled non upgradeable and consume batteries every three years whether you use it or not replacements average £100 in the UK.
put your money towards a desktop
pound for pound you will get a better, faster machine which could in three years time have the £100 that you would have squandered on a lappy battery spent on a memory or graphics card upgrade!
in terms of what you need to buy to get on the net depends on your service provider -they usually give you either a router or adsl modem [or cable modem] when you sign up!
wait until you get the PC and sort out an isp then worry about what else you need after
well, first you are going to need a cable or dsl connection instead of going through the phone with dial-up. i recommend this compay, http://www2.dslextreme.com/ you can get high speed for $13 a month which is just as cheap as a dial up plan. They will give you a modem to use.
Once you get that set up, the next thing you need is a router. this is the one I use, and it works great, http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...
you plug that in between the dsl modem, or cable modem if you go through the cable company, and the desktop computer you are using now. when you have that set-up (it's easy) your laptop should be able to connect to the internet from anywhere in your home, or even the back yard.
Andy has a bias against laptops. whatever. A modern laptop can do anything a desktop can do, plus you can stash it in a bag and take it with you on a trip. try that with a desktop.
It depends on what you want to do, but if it's surf the net, do some office stuff and msn and the like, then you don't need a power house.
I assume you have a desktop already with the internet. Most laptops should be wireless enabled (wifi). My partner has one. It's not super powerful but it does exactly what she wants. I put some more memory in it, and the laptop was only £299 from PC World. No they're not the best, but they're not all that bad. It lets her surf the net, play some games and sort digital photos and all that.
If you have a desktop that's connected to the internet you have two options. You can buy a wireless adapter, which fits into a USB socket on the PC. This will make your PC wirless and you can conenct your laptop through that. The downside is that the desktop PC would have to be switched on to access the net on the laptop.
The other option is a router. This is connected to the desktop and the modem, and the laptop connects to the internet through that so the desktop doesn't have to be switched on.
The other good thing about this is it's easy to connect a Wii or other wifi enabled device.
I have both a Netgear adpater and a Netgear router. The router is on my own desktop and the adapter is on my daughter's desktop so she can connect to the net wirelessly. The Netgear setup was really really easy and it set up the network with protection (so no-one else can piggyback your connection) quickly and simply. It takes you through every step.
And both of these were from PC World.
I got a free laptop from this site, I highly recommend it!
Forget PC World. Go to www.dell.co.uk/outlet This site sells wireless ready computers at reduced prices due to a change in specification, a cancelled order or a scratshed surface. All computers come with a Full One Year Factory Warranty.
I wanted to do the same thing recently so here how i did it.
I’m an AOL customer and when talking to a customer representative about what router I should buy he told me I’d be entitled to free router if I signed up to another 18 month contract so they sent me 'Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch' worth £49.
As my PC wasn’t wireless ready so I had to buy a wireless adaptor so I bought 'Netgear WG111 Wireless 54Mbps USB 2.0 Adapter' from Amazon for £15.50.
My laptop was already wifi ready, you’ll have to check if yours is, I know mine is because it has Intel Centrino Duo technology. If yours has not you’ll also have to buy a wireless adaptor for your laptop and any other PC/laptop you are going to be wanting to connect with. I strongly sugget when buying a laptop you get a laptop with Intel Centrino Duo technology as this will make your laptop wireless ready.
When the router came I unplugged my old wired router (whilst the computer was switched off), switched on the computer and connected the router with the supplied Ethernet cable (you’ll have to check your main comp has an Ethernet socket) and also connected the router to the telephone line, like my old router had been connected. I ran the CD and it set about installing the drivers and it even uninstalled the drivers for the old router (that’s how good the AOL easy installer disc is). After that I restarted the computer and installed the drivers for my wireless adaptor using the disc it came with. Once that had been done I put the AOL router disc back in and set about going wireless (this is called stage 2). I had to give my router a name (to identify it) and password, then when prompted I removed the Ethernet cable, thus going wireless. The connection had been established and now I had the internet running on my Pc.
For my laptop all I did was go to the system tray right click on the icon with the two computers with a red X and clicked 'connect to', selected my router and entered then entered my password for my router, then saved the network and I was up and running on my laptop. Remember if your laptop isn’t wifi ready then you’re going to have to buy another adaptor like you did for your PC (above).
If you join up with AOL then you’ll get a free router (the one named above). If you stay with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) then make sure you buy a router supported by your ISP as they will be able to give you custom information on how to configure it.
I think you might have to switch to broadband, i dont think you can go wireless with dial up.
Check out Dell for laptops. Mine is a Dell Inspiron 6400, its a good versatile powerful machine, it cost £500 plus i added some extras i.e. laptop bag, mouse, internet security, standard cover and upgraded the screen, it came to £780 and came within 5 days.
Well if you have a coax jack in your house, you can get high speed internet through a cable modem, which connects through an Ethernet cable. If you want to use dialup, you can do that. Nowadays, you can get a dialup wireless router. If you want to purchase a laptop, you should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it. I would highly recommend it.
