The battery of my laptop doesn't work!?

A friend gave me an old laptop. It's a Pentium 3.Everything works fine but it doesn't work with the battery.
Why is that?Is the battery dead? Can I fix it or should I buy a new battery?

Answers:
you can buy third party batteries pretty cheap. you'll need to know the model and make of your laptop and try googling. half the time, they are less than 50$ - a lot cheaper than a new laptop.
Yeah the battery is dead. You will need to buy a new battery, which in your case, may not be worth it because the laptop is so obselete. However, on my dad's laptop, the battery just cant hold a charge so we have to use it plugged in, which isnt that bad. If it wont work in general, get a new laptop. Dont waste money on a battery for that old of a laptop.
Ya it's died.
you can't fix it.
and don't bother buying a new one, they cost $100.00 or more.
nothing under $100.00.
and it's not worth it for a P3.
use the plug. i do. on my laptop.
