What would make a lab top keep freezening up?

Hiya Jujubean 1880,
If your laptop was freezing up at the "loading your settings" phase every time you turned it on then I would say the problem is in Windows.
Because the screen stays black sometimes when you turn it one tells me something important. Your laptop is failing before it gets anywhere near loading Windows from the hard disk. This indicates a hardware problem. I cannot be exact because the info provided is limited but the first thing I would look at is the hard drive.
Your laptop is failing during the POST phase (power on system test), but sometimes gets through it and starts loading Windows before freezing. I have seen this many times and it is almost always a failing hard disk.
One of the times that it boots you could try Thunder's F8 fix, but that would not effect the black screen. If you do get into Safe Mode, the first thing to do is a scandisk to check for errors. The next thing would be to do a system restore to the last time it worked OK.
A good deal on a new 2.5 inch notebook hard drive costs about $1 a Gigabyte. Take a look at this page to check replacement prices:

Scroll down to the middle of the page for notebook drives.
You might be able to take it to a repair shop for a low cost diagnostic and an estimate on repairs. Don't forget that if it is the drive, you will still have to setup Windows and all the other stuff before it will be any good. Some shops have transfer services and will load all the stuff from your old drive to the new one.
GOOD LUCK!!
when booting press and hold F8 key then select safe mode
run a full system scan for virus or spyware infections if it does not work this way try to format the system and install windows once again
