Can my computer support an LCD Monitor?

Okay, heres the story, I bought my computer way back in 2002 and ever since yesterday my CRT monitor has given up on me - it comes up with a black screen and a thin white horizontal line in the center - i think its dead. But anyway, i wanted to invest in an LCD monitor but I don't know if its compatible with my system. I have a ASUS GeForce 4 Ti4600 Ultra gfx card. Do i have to buy a normal LCD monitor or can i also buy a widescreen LCD? Also, with regards to dead pixels on LCD monitors, are they rare or is this a common problem? What factors do i need to know before buying an LCD monitor?

All help would be appreciated, thank you!

You can purchace a normal or a wide screen LCD as long as it has the standard VGA plug. Dead Pixels are pretty rare. Some of features to look for when buying an LCD monitor include: resolution, refresh rate, dot pitch, contrast, viewing angle, viewable size, response time, brightness and connecting ports. Decide what size monitor you want depending upon your available space and needs. LCDs come in a variety of sizes, with screens ranging up to 65 inches in diagonal size. Decide what viewing angle you need. When viewed from the sides, the picture quality of an LCD monitor suffers unless the monitor has a very high viewing angle (the closer to 180 degrees, the better). Check the native resolution of a monitor before buying. LCD monitors come with a single resolution also know as native resolution, referring to the number of vertical and horizontal pixels present in the LCD display matrix (the more pixels and the less space between them, the better).
Consider the refresh rate, which is measured in milliseconds. Many models now offer refresh rates as fast as 5 ms. The faster the refresh rate, the crisper the image. Look for a high contrast ratio. Contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest and darkest colors the monitor can display, expressed as a ratio such as 500:1, 700:1 or 1000:1 (the higher the first number the better). Keep in mind that while high brightness is usually considered better, a very high level of brightness may not be necessary (and might even give you a headache), especially if you tend to work in a dimly lit room. Compare prices of various models of LCD monitors. The prices will differ based on size, features and resolution. Compare prices and deals: online vis-à-vis the ones available at a local store. You may find that the prices of online products are low compared to the prices in a store. Study the dealer details carefully before choosing to buy online to make sure the dealer seems reputable. Remember to factor in any shipment costs if you decide to go for an online deal.

Good Luck
You can use an LCD screen as long as it's got the same VGA input as your CRT. This is a thick cable and the ends are usually blue; whatever, as long as it says VGA and has the same pin count and configuration Most of LCD's do, unless you're spending mad cash.

But uh, if you have a 5 year-old system why not just replace everything?
