My computer is dying on me. It occasionally comes back on, but then it shuts off again. Is it over?
Answers:
Is it a desktop PC? Open it up and blow out or vacuum out the dust bunnies. Blocked fans and filters can cause overheating.
there are a dozen things that could be wrong with it but the most likely culprit is the Power Supply Unit (PSU). If your PC is fitted with a cheap&nasty one it may simply be worn out.
Have you added any new hardware lately? PSU's can only cope with a certain amount of power drain - a 250w PSU for example, won't cope with more than 250w worth of hardware.
try unplugging all the bits you don't need and see if it comes back to life (pull out the graphics card, sound card and network card) then restart your computer: If it springs back to life you may need a new PSU.

1. Overheating
2. CPU
3. Motherboard
One part of the system need repairs or probably replacement.
It may be SMPS or Hard Drive or RAM or even the Cooling Tower on the processor.
Although the problem is expected to be very minor in nature, but requires a really expert Hardware Engineer to diagnose the problem.
sacha's short but sweet answers are quite correct
check that the cpu fan is fuctioning correctly - ewhile you are in there, clean out all the dust from vents and heatsinks
check on post , the cpu temperature
you did not mention how old it is - perhaps a pc repair may be in order or if too old, a new one?
I agree with the power supply comment. replace it quickly, it can damage parts in your computer and make you lose your files. it happened to me. took my dvd drive too. =(. get it fixed or changed pronto if that's what it is.
