How can I make my computer screen (Latitude D410 notebook) be on my TV (RCA HDTV Plasma or LCD, not sure)?

I have connected a VGA/Super monitor cable to my notebook and to my TV. Now what should I set my TV on to get it to be my monitor. Or, do I need to buy or do something else. The guy at the store said this cable is all I should need.

Please help, thank you very much.

Answers:
Yes, you need a cable. Look at the back of your TV and see if it has a 15 pin D connector at the back - it has three rows of 5 little pins and looks like this:
_____
\ ::::: /

(not sure if that will look right on screen)

If you have one of these, tell the guy at the store and he'll give you a cable. Connect this from your laptop to the TV. You should have a key on your keyboard, probably F8, that has a little blue monitor image or LCD/CRT in text. You need to hold down the blue function key and press this and it will switch between laptop only, TV only, laptop and TV at the same time...
There is a function you have to press to show it on another monior. Fn + F8 Hit is untill is show on the screen.
