I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW DO THE NUMBER OF ICONS DISPLAY ON YOUR MONITOR SLOWS DOWN YOUR PC's RESPONCE TIME.?

MY PC AT TIMES SEEM TO STOP FOR A LONG PERIOD BEFORE COMPLETING IT'S COMMAND.

Answers:
Does the number of lights you have on in your home affect your washing machine ?

No. Your desktop icons don't steal any resources.

But your system could probably use a good cleaning and defragmentation. Use CCleaner for the cleaning part:

Yes it can impact the way windows feels and responds if you have excessive amounts on your desktop, but you can help fix this. look at increasing the xp icon cache. I've always used it and notice that it does help with that response time your talking about.

What i mentioned was completely true, yes the # of icons can make your pc's response time feel sluggish if you have too many being displayed. Take a minute to look at the link i provided, its a proven fact that icon cache is set to small and by increasing the icon cache windows will devote more resources to caching all the icons/folders thus making it feel more responsive.

Of course other things like how many programs you have running, how much ram do you have, could be spyware, virus's, the HD drive may need to be defragmented ect.. those will also impact system speed, but that was not what the question was asking about. thats a whole different topic.
How much free memory does your computer have? Because the less it has, the slower it is going to run. When you have very very little free memory on your hard disk, sometimes you might get a prompt saying "Computer very low on virtual memory"
It will also be slow if you have a lot of programs running at the same time, like a lot of internet explorer windows, and maybe also the virus program running and something else aswell?
Try and just have one program running at a time, be patient with your computer, and try and delete unecessary files and free up some space.
Icon are just pic's sitting around they don't take up any of your resources, the thing to look for is you processor's in your task manager, you can go and see what is using what in there.
It depends on what you mean by icons. If you mean shortcuts on your desktop, or Quick Launch icons, then no that should not affect your speed. If you mean the icons on the bottom right of the screen, then its possible, because the more icons that are down there *usually* mean there are more programs running, which would slow down your computer. One way to check is to Ctrl - Alt - Delete and look at the Task Manager, and look at the performance tab. If the CPU usage is anything over 30%-40%, you have a program or process running that is slowing it down.
yes this has been explaine to me & somone else here has elplained it much bettter than o could :-)
What slows your computer down even more is how many shortcuts you have in your start up directory.

Keep that directory as clean as possible only have mandatory programs in there like your firewall etc. Things that you need constantly running.

Things you don't like messenger which can easily be opened when needed have no reason to be in your start up directory.

Most programs by default load themselves into your start up directory unless you tell it not to when loading the program the first time, because the program thinks it's the most important thing on your computer, it's not take the short cut out of the start up menu if it's not required and launch it only when you want to use it.

Everything that is in your start up directory auto launches and is constantly running behind the scenes even if your not using it and it slows down your computer dramatically.

Also run a defrag and scan disk frequently to get rid of all the excess space not needed, that will put all the pieces of your programs on your hard drive together allowing it to access them faster and clean up what is not needed.

I run that at minimum once a week, how often you need to run it depends on how much you use your computer.
yes it can have an adverse impact on you computer performance. I would suggest no more than 10 to 15 icons on your desktop but even that is a lot. yes icons are convenient, but they also have disadvantages. another thing that could be slowing you down is the active programs you have runnig in the background. look at the time display on your computer how many icons do you have down there I suggest no more than five or six.
Whatever u put on ur desktop is stored in the drive where the operating system is installed. u neeed to clear the desktop if u have put any files into it.

If we think logically , Increasing the number of files on desktop means that the computer have to remember more which takes time...but apart from the desktop it doesnt affects the system speed.

In case of only icons and no files, i dont think it affects the speed. so be calm no need to worry. u can put any number of icons on desktop. but its better to put these icons on start menu. u can work more organised that way.

Regarding the speed, try to install some good antivirus and scan the system fully. if the problem is not solved format the drive and install the OS again.
