Help w/ laptop display settings after connecting to hdtv!laptop screen has two large black bars on the side!

I somehow figured out how to display my laptop onto my hdtv via vga cable BUT my laptop screen has two black vertical "bars" on the side of the screen similar to how widescreen looks on a standard but vertical.
any ideas how to get it back.?
my video card is ATI Radeon XPRESS 200m

the issue is with my LAPTOP screen display...it looks like(in the link) below just NOT as blurry.

Change display resolution Start all programs/ control panel /display/advanced/ change your resolution.YOU will have two displays to chose from #1 or#2 It will tell you which is your LAP TOP !
