How do I get my text to appear darker, it seems washed out?

Right-click on your desktop then choose properties. From there select the appearance tab and click the effects button. Make sure the box "Use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts" is selected and choose "Cleartype" from the drop-down menu. Click ok, apply the settings and that should help.
