Why does the colors look muted on my flat screen monitor.?

i dont know exactly what you mean but i think i had a similar problem with my LCD, the colors were all messed up and then i found out that i hadn't pushed the cable in hard enough that why.
By "flat screen" do you mean you have an LCD monitor? Because "flat screen" is a term to describe the face of ANY monitor, usually a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube). If your entire monitor is thin, then it's likely an LCD. In this case, your problem may be that LCD monitors have only one true mode of resolution, known as "native resolution". To look the best, you need to run you computer in this resolution. The problem is some games will not let you select this mode so it won't look so good.

Another thing is, LCD monitors just don't have the visual quality of the bulkier CRT displays, no matter what you do.
