it worked fine a month ago. Now it come up with a message;"remove and check cartridges" I am told that my cartridges are 36+mos., old.. could they be too old?

That is most likely your issue, the electronics on the cartridges are only designed to last about 18mo - 2 years after date of manufacture. Yours are now three years old. Replace the effected cartridge and you should be printing.
