The refill was cheap through Walgreens (a pharmacy chain here in the midwest), was only $10 for the black and $15 for the color. The printer still "thinks" the ink is low and gives me a warning, but will still work. I did find I could check a box in the warning window "do not show this dialog again", so the warning window won't pop up (this may help other Dell printer users), but I am wondering if there is a way to trick the printer or computer into thinking I have installed new cartridges. I don't print very often, but would like to have an idea how much ink should be left in the future.

There is no way to trick the printer.
The ink level itself is just an estimate and is rarely ever accurate, usually not even close. Trust your eye, the moment you start to see fading pop the cartridge out and have it refilled.
there should be a way to reset it. hold down the off button for a few seconds. Or look at the online help on how to reset your printer by the maker.
That is one of the problems with trying to refill that type of cartridge. They have asmart chip inside that needs to be reprogrammed.
