If you have Internet explore 7 and have not installed the patch from hps' website then the director wont work. Go to the support and drivers then enter in the printer model and operating system then download and install the fix.
maybe its your pc?
is it a USB connection or a parralel port one?
i think you need to install first the scanner driver then the printer driver
