I am getting crappy results printing on presentation paper using a HP photosmart 7760 any ideas?

Did you make sure that you selected the correct type of paper that you are using? The ink in the #56 cartridge is not intended for coated or glossy paper. The pigmented ink won't set up properly, it'll remain tacky and will smear.
If you are using the #58, selecting the correct paper will automatically adjust the way that particular cartridge fires.
I'm not a paper expert, but if the rubber cement on the back doesn't seem to be affecting the print on the front (bleeding through), then you need to look at your paper settings. I make my own wine labels, and I have bought the ones at the wine store, as well as Avery labels. They work just fine.
Edit: you don't have to buy new cartridges in order to print on glossy. If you have the 56 and set to glossy paper, your printer will use the 57 to make black (dye-based ink...ideal for glossy)
Also, that particular Photosmart takes the same cartridges as my Deskjet 5550 workhorse. The ink is the same, and both machines are capable of 4800 optimized DPI. PhotoSmart printers have extra features that justify the PhotoSmart name.not different (or better) inks.
HP photosmart printers use diffeent ink cartridges than regular cartridges. I also hava a Photosmart that I have sitting on the shelf, (good for pictures only). I use a "regular" printer for my work. P.S. Photo smart is for sale!
