Printer won't work with computer.HELP!!?

I have a pretty old deskjet 656c that I used perfectly with my xp computer. Now, i got a new laptop that is Home basic vista. The printer comes with a USB cord and I thought that if i just plug it into the laptop, it'll work. The laptop tried to install the driver, but couldn't and asked me to put in the installation cd. i was like wtf, so I went online to try to get the driver. I tried installing it, but I didn't work --> maybe because its Vista. Any help or a solution to my problem is appreciated.

HP is claiming that the basic drivers is included with Vista and that there will not be a fully Vista compatible driver released for this model.

If you cannot get it to work with the basic Vista drivers, It might not work at all.Time to purchase a new printer.

Hit the nail on the head with that statement. Sorry, but considering Vista has issues with new hardware, it will certainly have issues with legacy hardware.
There is a vista 32 bit and a 64bit Did you install the 32bit? Uninstall the driver you just installed (go into printer ,faxes and delete all icons of printers)and unplug it from the usb port/reboot/install drivers with out the the printer being connected to the pc / Reboot with printer connected to the usb port Your printer should be accepted but print a test page if it doesnt print make sure its set to usb port/ not LPT1/ make sure its set to bi-directional cable. Then go back to HP web site and above where you chose your down load they have a driver test click it . if something went wrong they will tell you how to fix it
