i could only afford to buy one black catridge when it takes like 4, so what if i leave the old color one in. will that hurt it?

It won't neccessarily "hurt" your print device, it may drastically cut down on the amount of printing you're able to do overall. And if the color cartridge is empty, you'll only be printing in black and white. Which is not really such a bad thing. You may however get notifications that your black toner is low.
