Can you print on a dell printer without buying dell's ink, what I mean is can you buy another Brands ink?

On the other hand, the Dell cartridges are relatively simple to refill, but that can be messy.
Circuit City does the same thing with the "free" printers you get from them. You can only get ink from Circuit City.

Apparently there is a way to use Lexmark carts if you either change the heads on the catridge itself, or modify your printer.

It really depends upon the age and model of the Dell printer. Dell cartridges are made by lexmark, however in recent years design features and encryption have been added to prevent a user from placing a lexmark cartridge in a Dell printer.
A store brand dell cartridge is going to be a refilled cartridge. If you wish to go store brand save youself some money and just have the cartridge refilled.
