Can you print on a dell without buying their ink, what I mean is can you buy another Brands ink?

Yes, it is possible. There are different types of filler ink (Black and color) are available in market. Generally you will get this from store like - Staples, Officemax, Circuit city, Walmart etc.
The first thing you have to check on the printer cartridge in Dell printer is -
- If there is hole which is covered and sealed. Then you can refill the cartridge by removing seal and filling with the liquid ink for up to 80% of its capacity.
- Then cover and seal the hole such a way that no air will go in and ink can not spill out.
- Before sealing the cartridge you have to remove any air by special sucking nozzle.
- Then keep the catridge vertically for 1/2 hours in a container to see no ink is comming out from bottom.
- Once everything looks good then you can fit cartridge into the printer and start printing. Check for few day inside printer to see it is not leaking.
All of the different printers use different sizes of cartridges. That makes it tougher. But if you go to Office Max, they have Mexican-made knockoffs that fit.
It really depends upon the age and model of the Dell printer. Dell cartridges are made by lexmark, however in recent years design features and encryption have been added to prevent a user from placing a lexmark cartridge in a Dell printer.
Yes you can use a substitute but I have found if you call dell direct you can buy in bulk what it would cost you for two in the store will usually get you 4 to 6 from dell. And they usually give you free photo paper with it. 1 877- 465 -2968

Officemax sells some cartridges which are compatible with some of their printers. Basicly when you give them your ink cartridges to recycle for 3 dollars off that is what happens to them... They refill and resell them.
