Sorry, removal of the side pins is the only way to separate the two halves of the cartridge. It's also the most difficult part of refilling that cartridge.
Your refill kit should come with an allen key and instructions on where to drill. You simply use the allen key to push the pins out. It's safer for the PCR holder if you drill (correctly) than if you try to push the pins in.
Filling toner cartridges is messier than inkjet, I wish you luck.
Go to an office supply store, hand them that one and take the discount for a new one. Walgreens is advertising they will refill cartridges at a lower cost than a new one.
