How would you scan a newspaper photo without getting so much grain?

I have a flatbed scanner and I need to scan a photo from a newspaper.

It's coming out incredibly grainy.

Is there any way to reproduce the photo without so much grain?

Answers:
I am not sure if you have set your scanner to the highest possible resolution during your scan.

If the resolution of the scanner doesn't help you much, you need to use Photoshop to make the scan more 'smooth'.
Just a thought... Have you tried going to the newspaper's website to download the picture directly? My boss asks me to scan newspaper clippings all the time, but I just make a pdf of the article off the website instead. It saves a ton of time.
There are filters for Photoshop that can take care of it (somewhat, anyway), but you're never going to get a perfect copy by scanning.

If you have a digital camera that can make very high quality pictures, you might try that. I've had good results before.
