Can you scan a document and then add to it after scan?

When you scan something into a computer, it is saved as a picture file. If you wish to edit the 'text' in the picture file, then you'll have to first use Optical Character Recognition software to read the picture file and try to convert the 'text' in the picture into regular text that is used in a word processing document.
If you bought an all-in-one (multi-function) printer, then it should have come with a scaled-down commercial OCR program, like ABBYY's Fine Reader, or ScanSoft's Omnipage. The OCR program will save the information it retrieved from the picture file into a text file and then you have to load it into a word processor for editing and formatting. Read the OCR program's help file on how to get the best scanning results.
Scanned text documents should be scanned at 300 dpi or greater.
You can scan it to your word program & then 'save as'(give it a name) Then go to the word program & open the doc & then edit it.
Try it with a photo editor if you have one. I modify photos after scanning them. Maybe word can work if you can scan and save it as a .doc.

You can only add to it in a primitive way. When you scan the document it becomes an image file, most likely with the extension .JPG. If your definition of adding to it is using a word processor to edit/add to the text then you can not do it. The only way you can manipulate it is to use some sort of image editing program like Microsoft paint or Adobe Photoshop. Using one of these programs you could add and edit text, but it would be very tedious.
