Why does my scanner have to "warm up"..?

sometimes when I want to scan something and I press "scan" the box pops up and says "scanner is warming up"

why does it have to warm up and what exactly is it doing while it's "warming up"?

Answers:
It is quite literally warming up. There is a light in the scanner that makes the scanning possible. It is a halogen bulb that requires a certain temperature to be attained to work properly.
