How can I save scanned documents as something other than tif? It is the only option my scanner gives.?

I am guessing there is some setting that I am not able to locate. I am not certain if this setting would be within the scanner program or my computer somewhere. Upon uploading these tif files to other computers, they are not able to be opened. Where would I look for settings to make a change thus giving me other options for saving? I have a Canon Canoscan scanner.

You can buy third-party software like OmniPage that allow you to save to different formats. It seems PDF with searchable text (via Optical Character Recognition OCR) is a very popular format.

The TIF file is probably not able to be opened on other computers because it may have saved with compression that the other program can't understand. If you're using Microsoft's default "Imaging" software to open it, its not a complete TIF image viewer and will reject some TIF files.
