Anyone good out there about saving things as desktop back ground? I do this hundres of times, but am stuck..?

I placed a photograph in my scanner. I scanned the document. I saved it in many places, etc...desktop..my computer...etc..somehow...or another...the picture went into the paint program...for cropping, editing, etc...and after I saved it again from the paint program, I still could not use as background pic. The pain program keeps saying I have to save the darned thing before I can do this. I have saved it 4 billion times. Anyone who is logical...a step by step person?
Would appreciate some assitance. Thank yoiu

Answers:
This is big for allot of programs.
After you save it, confirm it, then close the program down, or save it to the name you want a different program to open it with, then save it again with a different name for your work copy.
My I suggest Irfanview for cropping, resizing and JPG compressions.
