Scanner question?

I HAVE A SCANNER,PRINTER,COPIER COMBO.DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE INK IN IT TO USE THE SCANNER?

Unless for some reason it has ridiculous firmware that prevents it from accepting any inputs when the ink has run out...

I've had that problem before, and I got rid of that device.
